Quick route decisions

Choose the San Diego plan that matches your family

Best 1-day plan Zoo early, Balboa Park reset, Mission Bay or pool

Combines one major attraction with a flexible afternoon; verify the final move from your hotel.

Best 2-day plan Zoo/Balboa plus Mission Bay/La Jolla

Gives one major attraction day and one coast day without overpacking.

Best 3-day plan Arrival reset, zoo day, coast choice

Leaves more room for naps, weather changes, or an unplanned beach block.

What to skip Zoo plus La Jolla plus Coronado in one day

That route can turn the trip into driving and parking management.

Pacing rules

How to keep the day from getting too ambitious

Choose one zone per half day

Keep zoo and Balboa Park together, make Mission Bay its own reset block, and choose either La Jolla or Coronado for a coast half day. Check the next parking or transit step for the exact day and season before promising a second anchor across the city.

Use a real stop rule

After the main anchor, continue only if everyone has eaten, the bathroom and rest needs are handled, and the optional stop can be abandoned without losing a reservation. A free garden or hotel pool is easier to drop than another timed ticket.

Adjust for younger kids

Shorten each block and protect the post-lunch reset. Keep snacks and the next bathroom known before changing zones. Use the toddler page for exact activity swaps rather than adding more stops here.

Adjust for teens or rain

Let teens choose the coast, museum, or food-led anchor and give them a say in what gets cut. In rain, use one aquarium or museum and keep the meal nearby instead of recreating the full route indoors.
